The bridge between Trogir and Čiovo was built for more than three years and was officially opened in July 2018. The main goal of the bridge construction is to avoid traffic congestion during the tourist season, as well as to relieve traffic from the old town of Trogir, which is under UNESCO protection.

The Trogir–Čiovo Bridge – Nearing Completion
Due to unforeseen problems, the completion of the works was postponed several times. The bridge automation system, responsible for light signaling and bridge lifting, failed. Our company STE d.o.o. was engaged to eliminate the problem and find a solution.

Implementation of single-mode and multi-mode cables
During the inspection and measurements, we detected a problem. During the installation process of the fiber optic system, a mix of multi-mode and single-mode fiber optic cables occurred, which led to the entire bridge automation system not functioning. In order to resolve this situation, we first installed the appropriate equipment to properly connect all parts of the fiber optic system.

Thus, the internal automation and signaling system of the bridge was solved with multi-mode, while communication to the outside towards the so-called main fiber optic system was realized with single-mode fiber optic technology.

We collaborated with STRABAG on this project, especially in the part of changing the existing technological solution of the bridge’s movable structure in order to ensure the correct functioning of the automation system.
Conclusion
Despite the challenges encountered, we successfully found a solution within the set deadline. The complete automation and signaling of the bridge were resolved using a combination of multi-mode and single-mode fiber optic technology.
